diary : september 2006
I
hadn't been there for 20 years but it was just as I remembered: How's
family beach house on
Long Beach Island, NJ. We were hoping for some serious beach
time, but the weather didn't cooperate. Did get in some bike rides
on the wonderful FLAT island. Highlight was dining at the
Green Gables - who
knew there was a top-tier restaurant tucked away in the middle of nowhere?
I mean, this town is too remote to have a Starbucks!
From
there we flew to FL and jumped on a cruise through the Caribbean, joining
pals Betty & Tom, and How's dad Arn, his wife Carol, her daughter Cindy &
partner Marcia. It was great having a whole crew on board - lots of
Scrabble & drinking while on the ship, and terrific beach adventures.
We tried "snuba",
which is snorkeling with a tank that floats above you, giving you a diving
depth of about 20 feet. Let's you get face-to-face with the fishes.
We also took a power boat around the island of St. Maarten to St. Martin
(from the Dutch to the French side!) The waters throughout were so
clear & beautiful - I've never seen anything like it.
Pal
Christine came in from NYC & we reminisced over dinner; toured a number of
modern homes in SF with buddy Andy; started dog training (again) with Shep
who seemed to need to be reminded who was boss; and I started a
terrific stress reduction class called "Mindfulness
Based Stress Reduction", based on the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn at UMass
Medical Center.
