Allie riding on MazatlanStep off the street car & onto a cruise ship.  Doesn't get much easier than that!  I'm referring to our cruise this month out of the Port of SF - a week long tour along SoCal & Mexico.  As we were passing under the Golden Gate Bridge on our way to our first port of call, my cell rang & it was old college bud Ann - who I hadn't spoken to since our wedding.  She was vacationing in LA!  And could meet us on Catalina Island the next day!  We had a fabulous reunion in a coffee shop, where I also met her musician beau, Joe.

How places well in the onboard poker tournamentA perfect mix of lazing about & site-seeing on this trip, which returned to many familiar places.  Snorkeled in Cabo, rode horses in Mazatlan, too lazy to even exit the ship at PV, but took in the gorgeous historic Hotel del Coronada (where "Some Like It Hot" was filmed) & checked out the okapis (look like a fuzzy zebra - giraffe cross) at the Zoo in San Diego, our last stop.

I took inspiration from Phyllis Diller's performance in the hilarious movie "The Aristocrats",  & decided to rename our chicken from Vulture (her given name) to Phyllis.  A little more dignified.  Operative word being little.

In solidarity with New Orleans, we got a King Cake for Mardi Gras.  Friends Brian (native New Orleans-er) & Steff & their twins came by to celebrate by getting a huge sugar buzz & worrying about eating the baby Jesus.  (If you don't understand why, here's some info on the King Cake!)

Sister Steph moves to San Diego after a long, tortuous moving process, leaving behind sunny LA and avocado trees & upgrading to an ocean view!

And now, our adventure one snowy night...  Friday night was in many ways a perfectly ordinary night for How and me. We read the newspaper, played with the dogs, worked on the computer, etc. We skipped dinner...we didn't have much around and weren't very hungry.

What is different is that we left the house at 1:30 pm to go to our cabin in Truckee. We finally got the car into the garage up there at 3:30 am. We got caught in a snowstorm and all of the activities listed above were done in our 2000 Toyota Sequoia.

Apparently dozens of cars spun out on the decline to Truckee; we were in a small group of cars, maybe 150-200 total, that got through on Interstate 80 after an earlier highway closure & the one that followed us. We had some emergency rations in the truck, and How traded an Odwalla Bar for a cup of hot coffee for me.   We used our cell phones to connect to the internet with our notebook computers, which we charged with a small portable inverter in the car!  We even found a hotel for pal Betty who was driving around Florida & phoned us, lost. :)
